Doncaster Heritage Open Days 2024

Friday 6th September to Sunday 15th September

This year the City of Doncaster is participating in Heritage Open Days more than they have in  previous years.   The Doncaster Civic Trust has been the main driver to organise this event and together with our local heritage volunteer groups and the City of Doncaster we have over 30 events around the City which are completely free and will hopefully be of interest to many of you.

These range from a selection of Talks, Walks and Workshops to many Heritage buildings opening their doors to the public.  This includes the Mansion House, Cusworth Hall, Masonic Hall and the Open Theatre – all very different but so interesting to have a look “behind the scenes”.

Some of the events are restricted in numbers so its important to book online as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

A Second York University Studentship

We are pleased to announce that the Trust are sponsoring a new student to work on projects for the Friends of Doncaster Mansion House.

York University Studentship

This year we will be working with the Friends of the Mansion House, the council and York University to fund a studentship for a person to work on Mansion House projects. This follows on from George Norton’s very productive year with the Friends. At the Trust we are very keen to promote a better understanding of Doncaster’s wonderful architecture….and what better place than the Mansion House. One of the options for the student will be to create a travelling exhibition telling the story of this great building which can be used in schools as a learning tool.

The Settlement Game Pilot Project

We are very excited to announce a major new project aimed at making our education programme more widely available to our young people in Doncaster.

In Autumn 2018 we will be getting together with the education service at Doncaster Museum and Doncaster sculptor Daniel Jones to provide free design sessions for our schools.

The sessions will be based on the fun and innovative ‘Settlement Game’ devised and led by James Copp for the Doncaster Design Centre. The game has been played dozens of times in local schools and we know it is a great way for kids to learn about architecture and town planning.

Training for facilitators will take place later in the year and for the pilot phase we will be inviting 10 schools to be involved.

Fifth Schools Architecture Competition

We are pleased to announce that our 5th schools architecture competition will be held on Monday 26th November. This time, we will be working with the education team from Doncaster Museum who will host the event at the Mansion House.

This time, we will be inviting primary schools from Doncaster to design a new museum and art gallery for the town. Once again, the children will be mentored by architecture students from Sheffield University.

Last year’s event at the Mansion House was well-attended and a lot of fun. Some of the designs created on the day were truly amazing.

Mansion House Dissertation Published

We have great pleasure in uploading George Norton’s fascinating study of the Mansion House’s early days. George’s work explores what it was, how it functioned and it’s influence on the late eighteenth century Doncaster region. The Trust are delighted to be able to support new research which adds to a wider understanding of perhaps the most loved building in Doncaster borough.
