Following on from last Wednesday’s launch of this project by students from Sheffield School of Architecture in Doncaster, we are pleased to announce that details of this exciting project are now contained in a website set up by the students.

This is a Doncaster Civic Trust / Friends of Doncaster Mansion House / Doncaster Council / Sheffield University collaboration funded by the Trust.
Here at the Trust, we are very pleased with the outcome of this project. The next stage is for the partners to assess how this valuable piece of work can be used to its fullest extent in promoting Doncaster Mansion House.

The Trust have great pleasure in inviting you to the launch of our exciting new project.
You may recall that the Trust and the Friends of Doncaster Mansion House have commissioned the Sheffield School of Architecture to create an educational package exploring and introducing people (particularly our schools) to this wonderful building.
A group of postgraduate architecture students have been working in the Mansion House over recent weeks and are now ready to exhibit their work.
The event will take place at 7:30pm on Wednesday 4th November at St Peter’s Church Hall, Chequer Rd, Doncaster.
This project is part of Doncaster Civic Trust’s education programme aimed at helping Doncaster’s young people to have a better appreciation of our rich built heritage.
We think you will find this event informative and inspiring.

We were so pleased with the results of our first architecture competition for Doncaster primary schools that we have decided to run it again this year. We were encouraged by the feedback we got not only from the schools but also from Sheffield School of Architecture.
Once again we are offering substantial cash prizes for the best design entries.

What the schools thought about the 2014 competition.
Our children loved the ‘Build a New Doncaster’ project. From the initial mindmapping of ideas to exploring the local area, the visit from Sheffield University students and working on their final design, they were engaged with their community like never before. The children found out so much and the project fed into so many areas of the curriculum: Maths, English, Art, Design, History and Geography. We were delighted that the children’s idea for a local train museum was chosen for the first prize – it is such an important part of our local heritage that needs to be celebrated as much as possible. Thank you to the Doncaster Civic Trust for such a wonderful project and the engaging, interactive resources that helped no-end in preparing an engaging, creative project that took on a life of its own and really inspired the children’s imaginations.

Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed being part of the architectural competition ‘Build a new Doncaster’. It gave them a real insight into the life of an architect and an understanding of the history of Doncaster and its architecture. Having the opportunity to work alongside some incredibly talented and creative young people, opened their eyes to new ideas and possibilities. We will definitely be entering the competition next year!’

From start to finish, this was a fantastic project for our pupils to be involved in. Working collaboratively as a design team, pupils learnt about the basic principles of architecture and building whilst also looking into the history of the local area they live in. Our pupils took full ownership of the design combining a range of technical and essential communication skills. This was 100% their work.
We were of course delighted to be awarded second prize but the real highlight of this experience was working with The School of Architecture at Sheffield University. Undergraduate students came in to school to deliver an exciting workshop and talk with the pupils about their design and ideas. The opportunity for the children to then visit The School of Architecture and see the end of year exhibition of work from architecture students made a definite impression. We started the project with a group of keen primary school pupils but finished the project with an aspirational future generation of architects, designers and artists. Thank you to Doncaster Civic Trust and Sheffield University School of Architecture for creating this.
